The Chemnitz School Model is a state school and was initiated jointly by educators and parents in 1990.
In the context of the conversion and expansion of the existing school building, the open spaces located directly at the school and thus in the area of the construction measures on the building are being redesigned.
In its current state, the schoolyard and the asphalt areas behind the school are equipped with isolated, worn benches and planters. There is no discernible allocation of individual areas to specific functions or groups of people. There is no quality of stay in these areas, which will become urgently necessary with the arrival of the CSM with its after-school care area and the associated increase in the number of pupils.
The schoolyard
The extension to the existing school building will reduce the size of the existing schoolyard. It results in a spatially appealing situation of the schoolyard area for the future, surrounded by three buildings, with an opening to the Stollberger Street. The asphalt pavement of the courtyard will be preserved and restored in the parts damaged by the construction measures.
In the rear area of the schoolyard, a group of ornamental cherry trees is planned in front of the gymnasium, which structurally divides the large schoolyard area and provides a shady place to stay in the otherwise empty schoolyard. Movable benches will be placed underneath to allow the space under the canopy to be used in a variety of ways. Four of the nine new plantings are illuminated with ground spotlights, which are inserted into the tree discs.
The after-school care area behind the school
The necessary paving of the narrow after-school care area is done with colored concrete slabs in the format 30x60 cm, which create enough space for a variety of outdoor activities (running, romping, playing ball, painting, jumping, etc.) The edging is done with small stone paving granite. To the side of the movement area, areas of lower speed and other colours are arranged (rest areas, play areas, planted areas). For example, directly at the school building an elastic surface is planned, which has low fall protection properties and is an inviting play area especially for children of primary school age. On the opposite side in the area of the setback to the area in front of the dining hall, a troughed small stone paving surface in concrete is planned, which opens into a drainage channel and is therefore suitable as a mud track without the external water supply such as hand pumps etc. being installed.
Steps are planned on the existing, interior stairways as escape routes into the outdoor area. These will be secured on both sides with railings.
Area in front of the dining room
A small courtyard will be spatially created between the extension and the existing school building. The embankment on the lawn used in the future for games and sports above this spatial situation is intercepted by a seating step system and made usable. Here, the students can eat outdoors or hold all kinds of gatherings in the context of lessons or leisure time. The seating steps will be partially equipped with seat cushions. A staircase of normal step size leads from the courtyard area, over the seating steps, and up to the open space. Retaining walls will be required on both sides of the stairway to secure the existing soil. These retaining walls are partly covered with climbing plants. A handrail is planned on the retaining wall in the area of the steps.
