Conversion of the Wentorf-Süd barracks site Development of a new "green" district

After the abandonment of the Bose-Bergmann and Bismarck barracks as Bundeswehr sites (1995), new opportunities and uses arose for the community of Wentorf near Hamburg: After demolition of the old crew and functional buildings - but with comprehensive preservation of the over 50-year-old tree population - a completely new district has been created on approx. 60 ha of land and integrated into the existing settlement area. Due to the systematic inclusion of open space planning in the urban development planning from the very beginning, an enormous greening, a good supply of play facilities close to the residential area, an excellent inner-city pedestrian/cycle path system, an attractive townscape and thus a high quality of living environment could be created.

The concept of generous open and living spaces contributes significantly to the communication and identification of the residents as well as to the creation of a livable district with "district culture".
In contrast to other greenfield development areas, the old tree population in Wentorf-Süd represented a very special potential: Individual trees, groups of trees and rows of trees structure the open spaces, set grown benchmarks to the buildings, serve the orientation in the district and the identification with the respective neighbourhood, and this already from the beginning.
The basic framework of the open space planning is formed by the largely undissected public green corridors. Many play areas are integrated into the diverse green and open spaces, which are suitable for all age groups and, due to the central location between the residential quarters, can be reached from all directions on short, attractive paths without danger or fear. The semi-public and private open spaces of the adjacent residential buildings are oriented towards the public green, creating coherent green and open space structures that merge into one another. Waterfront and casino park rest areas provide recreational opportunities. The bicycle route with tree trail runs through the neighbourhood as an independent network of paths like a "green ribbon".
The goal set by the municipality itself at the beginning "no less green and no more sealing than before" could be fully achieved by the green space and open space planning.
