The "Berlin Green Belt" From death strip to green corridor - the former Wall strip

Design concept Norweger Straße

Parts of Norwegian Street are to be redesigned as a green corridor - as already shown in the land use plan. For this purpose, areas of the railway area behind the existing wall are to be made accessible. A clearly recognisable footpath connection will be created in the road space, separated from the traffic.

Loosely interspersed groups of ornamental cherries could serve as a connecting design element for this green link. The northern section between Finnländischer Straße and Bösebrücke should be partially unsealed and planted. A multifunctional area for sports and play activities (table tennis, basketball, skating facility or similar) could be created under the Bösebrücke.
Partial areas south of the Esplanade should be officially demarcated for dog walking. North of the Esplanade, a path could lead up the railroad embankment and along the commuter railroad to Maximilian Street. The extension of this path to the S-Banhof Pankow would be desirable.

Design concept

For the "Wet Triangle", the essential goal is to enable accessibility. The plan is to have the wall path run northward oriented along the original course of the column path. The current plans envisage a more intensively used area to the west and a less intensively used, near-natural area to the east.

In the western part, various offers for games and sports as well as meeting places should be created.
Through low vegetation with only a few trees, the open character and the wide views should be maintained. The eastern part will be characterized by a more varied relief and areas with denser vegetation. Here a nature experience space for children and young people is planned according to their suggestions and ideas. Nature experience areas are "wild", near-natural open spaces without predefined play elements that can be visited and used by children and young people independently (i.e. without the accompaniment of adults).

Design concept for Bürgerpark, Panke and Schönholzer Heide freight station

The listed Bürgerpark will be preserved in its beauty.
In the course of the redesign of the areas of the Pankow green space office, a better connection between Bürgerpark and Mauergrünzug will arise here.

The straightened course of the Panke is being made more natural. This includes flatter banks, small swings in the flow and plantings in the water. The rainwater retention basin on Wilhelm-Kuhr-Strasse is to be permanently flown through in the future.

The routing at the intersection of Schulzestrasse, Wilhelm-Kuhr-Strasse and Am Bürgerpark is to be made safer. Current considerations are to designate the street Am Bürgerpark as a bicycle lane.

Kinderbauernhof
The children's farm Pinke Panke as a special place of learning and experience for children and young people from Pankow, Wedding and Reinickendorf may receive an expansion area. Attached to the north can be a nature experience space where children can play independently in nature.


Güterbahnhof Schönholz
The former Schönholz freight station should be made accessible and made accessible by a network of paths. The forest stands will be preserved and serve for nature-oriented recreation. The former loading road at the railway tracks could be unsealed and laid out as a meadow. The station building is to be put to a subsequent use.

All this is possible, however, only if the state of Berlin acquires these areas.

Design concept for the north moat

In order to make it easier to experience the Norgraben as a body of water, the surrounding woody vegetation should be thinned out considerably. Two balconies on the north side of the ditch bank could then invite people to linger.

The Wall green corridor between Nordgraben and Rosenthal is of particular importance for recreation close to residential areas. Here, spontaneous plant growth since the fall of the Wall has created a varied landscape that is to be preserved and made more accessible. Through maintenance measures, lower vegetation stands are to alternate with bushes and groups of trees, thus forming an attractive semi-open landscape.

South of the "Pankow VII" cemetery, individual elements made of natural materials could invite people to play close to nature.

Perspectively, the Wall Trail should run along the route of the former Kolonnenweg. This would require a crossing of the route of the Niederbarnimer Eisenbahn (NEB) near the Nordgraben.

The motif of pink blossoming ornamental cherries could symbolize the former course of the Berlin Wall in the southern area of the green space. A square on the bank of the North Moat, which has been made more natural here, could invite people to linger.
