The Rems weir at the hydroelectric power plant of the Waiblingen public utility company at the Häckermühle in Waiblingen with a drop height of 3.5 m lacked passability for fish and aquatic organisms. With the opening and relocation of the bank reinforcement, a pipe culvert and a near-natural bypass channel with a length of approx. 130 m, this connection is integrated into the existing Rems bank.

In addition, there is a new near-natural riverside park, which was made possible by removing out-of-place fill and converting former sports facilities. The Rems is thus not only ecologically upgraded, but at the same time the flood flow cross-section is expanded.
With a promenade set back from the river along an adjacent new development, the natural space of the Rems is made tangible in the city. In addition, rainwater from the new development "Am Wasen" will be fed into the riverbank park and led to the Rems via meadow troughs.
The bypass channel at the Häckerwehr and the new Rems riverbank park serve both the biotope network and the continuity and experienceability of the Rems and Rems riverbank as well as the upgrading of the "landscape" in the city. Together with the Remster Terraces at the Stihl Gallery above the Häcker Weir, this project creates a coherent piece of "Remspark" directly on the edge of the old town and directly on the Remstal Cycle Path and Remstal Route.
The construction of the bypass channel and the design of the Wasen riverside park are building blocks of the "Waiblinger Wasserweg" and part of the measures for the green project 2019.
