The "joint" between the Senckenberg-Anlage and the Friedrich-Ebert-Anlage is flanked by the Messeturm, the Festhalle and the Frankfurt Trade Fair. Surrounded by paths, lawns and herbaceous plantings, the pond, which was drained for 10 years due to the construction of the underground railway, was renovated in 1999. With its 12 m high fountain, which is illuminated at night, it is bordered by a sparse grove of low-cut plane trees in the west. Despite the traffic noise all around, numerous visitors can be found on the park benches on sunny days, in the company of pond chickens, Nile geese, ducks and the occasional heron.
In the area of the pond, the first former alternating flower beds were transformed into new types of representative perennial plantings in autumn 2002. With this pilot project, the Parks Department tested a plant selection that was to be left largely to its own devices after a period of intensive cultivation of two years. The intended goal of producing a colourful, richly structured planting, but one that is considerably less expensive to maintain, was thus achieved and has since established itself as a prime example of a rethink in the planting of urban green spaces.
