Having carried out two major garden conservation surveys of the green spaces in the Hufeisensiedlung in 2003 and 2009-10, the Katrin Lesser office had the opportunity in 2010-11 to restore the front garden around the famous Hufeisengebäude in keeping with its listed status.
The front garden strip on Lowise-Reuter-Ring, which is only four metres wide, was edged with privet hedges in 1926 and planted with 98 spherically trimmed robinia high trunks. However, these were replaced in the 1970s with columnar hornbeams, which were not fully preserved by 2009. The tall trees pushed up edging stones, shaded apartments and obstructed the façade.
In order to be able to experience the entire complex, which has been registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008, as a unit again, the remaining columnar hornbeams were removed and 98 robinias were uniformly replanted as spherical robinias. The project was financed 1/3 by federal funds and 2/3 by GEHAG, represented by Deutsche Wohnen Management GmbH. Now residents and tourists enjoy the homogeneous picture again.
In addition, the former rows of fruit trees could be replanted in some tenant gardens within the horseshoe.
