The Viereckteich was created from a silted-up body of water in the Georgengarten (UNESCO World Heritage Site Dessau-Wörlitzer Gartenreich). Around 1927, the square water area was dug out and surrounded with straight lines. The pavilions erected at the corners have disappeared, and a zigzagging embankment to the south of the pond is only visible to some extent in the woodland. However, the water surface, paths and the birch planting on a terrace to the east of the pond could be restored. In the course of the renovation, the stairs made of exposed aggregate concrete elements from the period of origin also had to be restored or replaced in parts. An interesting detail was the curved shape of the large staircase in the east. All three stairs lead directly into the water surface. Subsidence in the subsoil as well as the ravages of time had led to considerable damage to the structures.
The water surface had recently been narrowed to a narrow watercourse by heavy reedification. By deepening the watercourse and sealing the embankments underground, the re-emergence of the reeds is to be largely prevented.
