In the years between 1924 and 1930, the open spaces of the settlement at Schillerpark, listed on the World Heritage List, were created according to the pattern of open perimeter block development with a green decorative courtyard in the tradition of Anglo-Saxon squares as one of the first Berlin settlements of modernism.
The rooms, act as screened interior spaces with views at the open block edges.
The open spaces are separated by rows of trees into two parts, a lawn courtyard and a sand-filled play area. Bruno Taut's design, submitted in1928, emphasized the unity of open space and architecture.
The redevelopment restored the spatiality by clearing the shrub vegetation and replanting the rows of trees.
The open spaces designed by Walter Rossow after the expansion of the estate in the 1950's receive tenant gardens and can be used in a more diverse manner.
The unity with Taut, is with Rossow the addition, the specific emphasis of individual features of the architecture (delicacy, lightness) as well as the urban environment determined by the Taut buildings (vistas Taut courtyards, street alignments). Therefore, in Rossow we find both several materials and a greater variety and staggering of planting.
Another part of the settlement shows with row buildings detached from the street edge to the outside more open garden spaces. The private tenant gardens are set back by shallowly sloping embankments.
The tree population was restored to the original design objectives. The resulting brightness enables the creation of sophisticated plantings and extensive lawns.
