The most important headquarters of National Socialist terror were located on the site of today's "Topography of Terror", next to the Martin-Gropius-Bau and not far from Potsdamer Platz, from 1933 to 1945: the Secret State Police Office with its own "house prison", the Reichsführung-SS and, during the Second World War, also the Reich Security Main Office.
After the end of the war, the site was leveled and initially used for commercial purposes. It was not until 1987 that it was opened to the public under the name "Topography of Terror" as part of Berlin's 750th anniversary celebrations. A separate exhibition pavilion and the now uncovered remains of buildings on the former Prinz-Albrecht-Strasse (now Niederkirchnerstrasse) and Wilhelmstrasse documented the history of the site.
Among the numerous places of remembrance, monuments and museums that commemorate the National Socialist era in Berlin today, the "Topography of Terror" occupies a special position as a "place of the perpetrators". In the centre of the capital, it provides information about the headquarters of the SS and police state at an authentic location and makes the European dimension of the Nazi reign of terror visible.
