The dams on Lake Rur draw a horizon into a landscape that knows no horizon. This line divides the formerly deep valley into a forest world and a water world.
The design works with trees above this dividing horizon. The theme of the forest atmosphere of the national park is thus transformed on the banks of Rurberg into a sequence of different atmospheres essentially characterized by trees.
The body of the dam, as the only treeless place, is to be emphasized in its horizontality and linearity via a striking dam crown that is placed over the entire lake crossing. A shining landmark that is visible from a distance as a fine accentuation in the valley.
