Grundriss der zerstörten Synagoge und des heutigen Denkmals © 1996 Zvi Hecker
The memorial consists of rows of concrete benches. Built exactly over the former position of the original benches in the old synagogue, they bear witness to the loss of the building and its congregation.
The trees and shrubs that have grown over the ruins of the synagogue bear witness to its destruction. The fire road represents the present situation.
In this way, all the elements - the benches, the trees and the fire road - represent different levels of time, just as in the Talmudic text.
The synagogue in Lindenstraße no longer exists. All that remains are benches - a page from the prayer book.
Each page of the Talmud contains interpretations of a biblical passage from different centuries. Our work is to be understood in this context. It is a page from the book and it tells the hundred-year history of this place on Linden Street. We have added nothing to what was there before. The present position of the benches corresponds exactly to the arrangement in the ground plan of the destroyed synagogue.
As in the Talmudic text, the benches, the trees and bushes, and the fire road belong to different histories of the time. What commemorates the synagogue are the benches. Destruction is evident in the presence of the trees and bushes give rhythm to the rows of benches, like the pauses and punctuations of a text, read by the visitor walking between the lines.
This is a narrative of loss. The benches become graves. Lines of graves - lines of text. Memory sheet - prayer sheet.
