The present area of the park was used for agriculture for centuries. In 1883, the land was acquired by the city of Berlin. On the site, waste water was then trickled, i.e. seeped away over a large area. Two of these reservoirs were still preserved and were integrated into the park.
After the end of the Rieselfeld use, the constructional development of the large housing estate Hohenschönhausen with 35,000 apartments for about 100,000 people began in the 1980s.
