The approximately 210-hectare Wartenberg Landscape Park is an important stepping stone in the Barnimer Feldmark Regional Park. The functioning coexistence of agriculture, nature conservation and recreation in the immediate vicinity of the Wartenberg housing estate makes it a model project for dealing with urban areas.

The aim after reunification was to establish a fourth local recreation area in the north-east of Berlin with the Barnimer Feldmark regional park. The landscape here was not characterized by forests, lakes or other distinctive structures, but by the sheer expanse of the field structures.

A new type of recreational landscape was therefore sought. To this end, the Berlin Senate launched a Europe-wide landscape design competition in 2001.

The characteristic openness was to be retained in the design of the park. The hard edge of the extremely dense large housing estate was contrasted with a spatially richly structured landscape that does not restrict the expanse but, on the contrary, constantly stages new views and panoramas. It was only through the fragmentation and differentiation that spaces were created in which people feel comfortable and which now allow a variety of uses.

The park has been realized step by step since 2001. Following structural measures such as the development, the reforestation of around 50 hectares of woodland and the renaturation of two water ditches, new activities have been realized. A skating circuit was inaugurated in 2006, followed in 2007 by "play trapezoids", which were designed as near-natural playgrounds with the children on site. A popular excursion destination is the pasture of the Scottish Highland cattle, which are looked after by the Malchow nature conservation station.

The entire 3.5 km length of the Hechtgraben, which crosses the site, from its source in the east to its mouth in Lake Malchow, has been transformed into a near-natural watercourse and now forms an attractive green link.
