Berliner Platz and the surrounding development were built in the 1970s as a district centre. The establishment of shops and gastronomic offerings in the buildings has created the lively center of the district here. The aim of the redesign was to further expand and strengthen its function and at the same time to achieve a contemporary design of the residential and business environment.
The entire area between the northern and southern edge of the square was conceived as a square area into which the street is integrated and subordinated. All design elements contribute to presenting the square as a continuous unit. In contrast to the urban design of the open spaces along the street, a softer, more intimate design was envisaged for Berliner Platz. The idea and guiding principle was to establish a "green living room".
Intensive information and discussion took place as part of the public participation process. In the end, the almost one hundred owners of an underground car park below agreed to the redevelopment and the design for the redesign could be implemented.
