The former Belgian barracks on the outskirts of Brakel was an almost forgotten place: inaccessible, unknown and in large parts unused. In September 2008, the office B.S.L. was commissioned by the city of Brakel to develop a concept for the development of the open spaces in the southern part of the former Belgian barracks. The conversion of the open spaces was closely related in terms of urban development and function to the already completed conversion of the former housing complex of the Belgian armed forces. Both projects were financed by the "Socially Integrative City" programme.

The result is an open space that is integrated into the city of Brakel and is perceived and accepted as a natural part of the city as a whole. It contains recreational opportunities in the field of games and sports, which are otherwise available neither in Brakel nor in the surrounding area, and at the same time forms the link between the city and the adjacent landscape. The neighbouring old people's home benefits from this in a special way, but ultimately the Lütkerlinde Generation Park represents an improvement for the entire town.

In 2011, the project was awarded the Soil Protection Prize of the State of NRW in the category "Land Recycling".
