The design approach was to bring out the urban space with its historic façades and at the same time do justice to the modern demands placed on it. The aim was to plan a surface that would hold the long, narrow, curved space together. The paving of the 30,000 square meter pedestrian zone follows the curve of the medieval city layout and gently hugs the bend, consisting of wide longitudinal and narrow transverse slabs of light granite.
The urban space has also been modernized with new street furniture, fresh plants and a differentiated lighting concept. The spatial and lighting design connects the heterogeneous peripheral buildings consisting of medieval town houses, church buildings, turn-of-the-century commercial buildings and new department stores.
