Kalkar's market square thrives on the high level of use of its edges. The redesign focuses particularly on this area. A large-format slab covering made of cut basalt lava provides the restaurants on the northern edge of the square with an appropriately elegant and walkable surface. An important component of the design of the square was the development of a lighting concept with discreet emphasis on the historic façades. A reduced, contemporary lighting element was deliberately juxtaposed with the historic substance and recessed floor luminaires were dispensed with.
