In the post-war period, the former coal port was used as a coal storage area, parking lot and construction waste dump. It was not until the end of the 1970s, when planning began for the west span bridge of the motorway over the Saar, and the harbour island was needed as a support for the northern bridgehead, that the now heavily overgrown site returned to public awareness.
