A motorway between the Upper Rhine Valley and Lake Constance is planned as a bypass for several localities in the heavily congested Upper Rhine Valley. The accompanying landscape conservation plan deals with the planned expansion in the section between Karsau and Wehr.
The planning is particularly complex due to the fact that some of the affected landscapes are extensive and structurally rich deciduous forests, valuable meagre orchards and richly structured cultural landscapes. In addition, the FFH aspect (various FFH habitat types, bat species such as Bechstein's and eyelash bats, woodpecker species of the forests and occurrence of the yellow-bellied toad in two FFH areas) is of particular importance.
The concept of measures comprises approx. The concept of measures comprises approx. 400 ha of silvicultural measures and approx. 50 ha of measures in the open countryside (lowland meadows, orchards) which take into account both the special European species protection and the maintenance of the coherence of NATURA 2000.
