Zaporozhye Square Square and boulevard

Redesign of Zaporozhye Square into a modern city square.

The redesign of the square is based on the idea of further thinking the urban structures - developed by the former city architect Ludwig Freitag - for the area of Zaporozhye Square. Freitag's model - a park city with an exciting network of parks and green corridors - was the motivation and basic idea behind all conceptual and landscape architectural considerations.

The open space planning carefully picks up on the historic square composition and reinterprets it. The existing plane trees become a "square boulevard" and form an outstanding setting and backdrop for the new neighbourhood square. The central design idea was to rediscover the avenue as a design leitmotif of the Parkstadt for strolling, lingering and playing.

With its uniformly banded pavement structure, the square flows around the adjacent Bert-Brecht-Haus and extends its square edges to the existing building facades. It thus forms a calm, generous frame for the elongated plane tree roof.

On the center of the square are slender, sculptural-looking play stelae up to six meters high, which invite visitors to climb, swing and slide. This play area is complemented by a water feature. The "long bench" with its monolithic, sharp-edged design offers space for sitting, lying and playing. Along the eastern building facades, the square offers free space for extensive outdoor catering.

During the day, the avenue of plane trees forms a shady roof. At night, the square axis is accentuated by a sky of light. A special accentuation of the historical architectural backdrop is just as much part of the lighting concept as a functional illumination of the parking spaces.
