Heinrich Hertz Vocational College An interplay of landscape architecture and graphics

Redesign of the outdoor facilities for the Heinrich-Hertz-Berufskolleg in Düsseldorf.
The Heinrich-Hertz-Berufskolleg in Düsseldorf is a technical college with a focus on chemistry. The existing school complex was extended by a new building. As part of this construction project, the outdoor facilities were also redesigned.

The centrally located new schoolyard, which connects the existing buildings with the extension and the neighboring Franz-Jürgens-Berufskolleg, has created a cohesive school campus. In reference to the name giver of the vocational college "Heinrich Hertz", an oversized asphalt graphic of the "Hertz dipole" - electromagnetic waves for signal transmission - adorns the entire schoolyard.

The existing tree population is staged by tree enclosures made of stylized leaf shapes. The tree enclosures expand in some places to form seating (benches, bleachers, seating group with table) for users. These are made of Plenera, a sustainable material consisting mainly of natural raw materials.

In addition to its function as a place to stay and communicate, individual areas of the schoolyard can be used by students and teachers as a "green classroom".

The schoolyard is complemented by the open spaces near the building consisting of plant beds, the teachers' car park - set into a modelled lawn - with 30 parking spaces and an access road to the adjacent tram stop.
