The Stadt-Natur-Park Flingern has been created on a former freight station site in Düsseldorf. A modern city park in which relicts of the former railway use have been integrated.
The Stadt-Natur-Park Flingern is the new heart of the residential area "Grafental" and is visited by its residents as well as by the employees of the surrounding companies.
The park complex takes up the most important urban axes of the surroundings in many ways and is thus integrated into the urban context. A straight and filigree band of use the "Gleispromenade" interprets the "city edge" and formulates a clear gesture in the heterogeneous urban context. The other parts of the park frame the ribbon of use and are developed in accordance with its natural and ruderal habitus.
In the north of the green space is the entrance area, the Grafenberger Entree, a square with a quality of stay. The urban "Gleispromenade", which forms the backbone of the park and opens it up in a north-south direction, connects to the square. At first it runs as a simple path made of large-format concrete slabs, later it expands and accommodates play, sports and recreational uses.
The counterpart to the "track promenade" is the landscaped area running parallel to it. Here, a curved path made of water-bound road surface, near-natural play elements, extensive planting and an existing small forest characterize the appearance.
In order to remind of the former railway use, various relics such as railway tracks, buffer stops and signal poles were integrated into the park and partly given a new function. For example, the signal poles serve as plant scaffolds and the railroad tracks as borders for plant beds.
Four play or sports areas are distributed throughout the park. On the "track promenade" is the "container play area". Two distinctive industrial containers - which make reference to their former use - offer children the opportunity to slide and play with sand. The containers are custom-made, designed and built down to the smallest detail for the park.
In the landscaped part of the park is the "Birch Grove" with play tipis. It is designed for younger children and encourages role play.
In the Slagline area, the sense of balance can be trained. On the one hand, there is the possibility to balance on a permanently installed band of steel cables and on the other hand to stretch your own band between the free posts.
Somewhat off to the south end of the park is a parkour facility. Parkour can be practiced on obstacles such as walls, platforms, balustrades and horizontal bars. This possibility also uses the adjacent secondary school for your school lessons.
