Redesign of the outdoor facilities of a school, from the schoolyard to the sports field
In Cologne-Mülheim, the Montessori secondary school dating from the 1950s was extended by a new building. As a result of the construction work, a much smaller schoolyard was created that was enclosed on all sides. To compensate for the reduction in space, a meadow area to the south was prepared for movement activities.
The students have two areas at their disposal after the redesign. The enclosed schoolyard is a distribution area for the adjacent buildings. Next to the running area is an equipment play area and the open-air classroom: concrete blocks arranged freely in an arc stand staggered on the slope. They provide sufficient space for a school class, but can also be used during free time.
The schoolyard extension includes a newly defined access from Ferdinand Street as well as additional exercise areas. There are table tennis tables and benches on an asphalt surface. Adjacent to this is a small playing field with sports surfacing.
Ferdinand Street has been removed from development traffic in this area. It became a parking lot for the school, but remained recognizable as a street.
