The given functional links through bus, S-Bahn and U-Bahn as well as the associated footpath relationships allow the "open spaces" for an expanded design to melt down to a few "islands" that "float" on the square.
The lawn island captures an inviting grassy area with a slightly raised seating edge. Under the roof of the food and beverage island, within view of all three major entrances, is the new kiosk-café. The Chill-Out-Island offers the new youth meeting point with a grandstand of ascending seating steps above the TG exit and a synthetic surface suitable for sports. A large roof forms the spatial end of the square. Its board-like structure is derived from the existing station roofs and is overlaid with the circular islands of the square in the form of light domes.
