Königsee Bahnhofstraße City street and open spaces

A demolished building in Bahnhofstrasse was acquired to improve bus connections to Königsee town center. The vacant lot was to be converted into a bus stop and transition area to the city center. The entire Bahnhofstrasse was completely renovated, the side areas redesigned and the bus stop areas relocated to new open spaces. In order to preserve the closed street edges, the façade lines were taken up again by a large pergola with an integrated bus stop (canopy/glass front). The open space in the gap between the buildings was divided into 3 areas with staggered heights.

The upper level was designed for a future kiosk with a direct connection to the old town. In the longer term, there are plans to set up a permanent sales stand with snacks, tickets and newspapers, which will be placed on the existing pavement as a fixed modern room cell. In order to provide the necessary space for outdoor catering in summer, the area will be pushed up to the middle level like a balcony. A strip in front of the north side will be greened.

The middle level is separated from both streets by height jumps and is therefore well shielded as a preferred place to stay and linger. In addition to a large solitary tree and a drinking fountain, the area is framed by seating walls that continue to the lower level via seating steps.

The spanning steel pergola creates the framework for the weather-protected areas of the bus waiting area on the one hand, and on the other hand shields the middle level from the street traffic, Bahnhofstraße and, in its main function, closes the gap in the façade of Bahnhofstraße. For the waiting area, a canopy was inserted into the pergola over two bays, as well as a glass front facing the street over one bay. An information board with video option completes the bus waiting area.
