A typical and therefore important appearance for Sömmerda is the curved, widening and narrowing street spaces, which are also reflected in the paving. Particular emphasis was placed on preserving and emphasizing these features.
The streets are designed with a classic W-profile and the sidewalks are additionally paved with slabs to make them easy to walk on.
Large granite paving made from sawn-up old paving was used for the road and granite slabs for the pavements. All side areas, as the actual city pavement, were covered with small basalt paving in a historical paving pattern. This choice of material is consistent throughout the entire city center.
The only exception in 2010 and 2011 was the modern design of the upper market square with large-format slabs. As a contemporary design, this area is to a certain extent embedded in the surrounding classical ambience.
Design objectives
- Complete reorganization of the street spaces as pedestrian zones
while emphasizing the historical features and
the character of the farming town.
- The most versatile possible use of the newly created areas
- the pedestrian zone should have a street and square character
be preserved
- The placement of permanently installed stalls for retail, snacks
and technical installations in the market street
- Expansion for temporary market activity.
