Between the new Milaneo shopping centre and the Stuttgart Library, which opened in 2014, Mailänder Platz has now also been completed. A square that creates atmosphere between culture, living and commerce and represents a platform for the multifaceted nature of public, urban life. While the grove of trees provides shade and a comfortable place to linger, the walk-in fountain sculpture serves to encourage visitors to play and take action. In addition, the square improves the microclimate in the immediate vicinity, serves as a heavy rain buffer and uses rainwater from roofs for water design.
A square today must cleverly integrate a variety of functions, be sustainable and also aesthetically pleasing. Mailänder Platz is a special place to stay among the new Stuttgart squares in the Europaviertel, making this new center an attractive and urban experience space. The spatial structure with the water axis and the grove of trees succeeds here in the balancing act of guiding flows of people from the underground station to the library and the surrounding restaurants and shops, while at the same time offering a variety of places to stay, communication and activities for all generations.
