Freyburg's historic town layout, the extensive town wall and a large number of historic buildings as well as the landmark town church of St. Marien have been preserved to this day. The historical image of Freyburg's town centre knew only two open and communal spaces within the otherwise walled quadrant - the market square and the church square. This is where the proposed redesign picks up - a church square around the cathedral as the alter ego of the market square in front of the town hall.
