Eschwege's market square has to fulfill a variety of functions: As a transitional area to the pedestrian zone, it must offer cars and buses turning and parking facilities, it must provide space for market days and events, it is a forecourt for retailers and a garden for outdoor catering. With all these requirements, the needs of pedestrians were often neglected in the past. In the course of the redesign, all functional areas were retained, but better structured and designed to be barrier-free and appealing. The market square now technically meets today's requirements and visually forms the appropriate basis for the historic inner city development.
A consistent design concept is to be developed for the design of the open spaces. Although individual open spaces and square areas can be designed in a differentiated way, an excessive variety of materials and colors should be avoided. A consistent design line should be recognizable across the entire area of the square. For this reason, large areas of concrete block paving will be laid on the market square, which will be interspersed with narrow strips of natural stone in the style of the design below the town hall.
