The old Oberpostdirektion is located in the city centre on Postplatz. The formerly ruinous existing buildings were redesigned in the course of renovation and expansion into an inner-city, attractive residential complex.
The challenge of the open space planning was to take into account and combine the most diverse usage requirements in the outdoor space and thus to develop a representative, multifunctional usable design.
The high-quality outdoor space planning includes the design of two courtyards. These are zoned into different areas and linked with each other. Privately used terraces are demarcated from communal spaces, but the boundaries are designed to be permeable. Large areas lushly planted with perennials and loose shrubs turn the inner courtyards into green oases of recreation. In addition to the courtyards, the access area on Marienstraße, the private garden spaces in this area, and an outdoor terrace for restaurant use are also planned. Attractive, diversely structured shrub and perennial plantings serve here as a flowing transition element between private and public spaces. Partial areas have been coordinated with the neighbouring green promenade ring.
Multifunctional lounges are created for all users, well screened from the street, inviting them to linger, for example during their lunch break on one of the benches under shady trees in the green courtyard or more privately on their own sun terrace.
