In summer 2016, Pinneberg got a new gateway to the Wedeler Au Regional Park, the Pinneberg Tree Park with 26 "Trees of the Year" as an attraction for environmental education close to the city.
During planning, the trees were arranged in the terrain in such a way that they imitate natural tree communities, e.g. alders and willows as "woody plants of the floodplain landscape". The pathways are barrier-free so that people in wheelchairs, for example, can explore the tree park independently.
As part of their environmental education, students from the Theodor Heuss Gymnasium created multimedia information about the individual tree species during their lessons. This information can be easily retrieved from the attached information signs using a smartphone.
The success of the project was due above all to the voluntary commitment of many of those involved. Thus, the project could be successfully implemented despite exclusive financing through subsidies and donations.
