In the area of the new South Bund on the Huang Pu River were the first port facilities of Shanghai. Thus, the South Bund is the southern extension of the world-famous "The Bund" and today's Chinese Bund. With the "wave promenade", the open space concept picks up on the historically grown path connections from the old city of Shanghai to the historic harbour in the form of linear streets leading to the river and stretches out the end of the access routes on the bank like bastions.
There, the bastions merge into a promenade that oscillates like a wave along the river for 2 km, interrupted by bastions and differently designed green islands and terraced gardens as places of peace and contemplation. In addition to its horizontal course, the wave also varies in topographical shape from the highest point at the bastions to the lowest points at the green islands.
The center of the wave promenade is the Dongjiadu node with a generous plaza area and a set of seating steps designed like an amphitheater. In the darkness, the steps are illuminated by LED lights in the undercut of the seating steps in order not to disturb as many open perspectives as possible and to accentuate the wave promenade spectacularly in the night hours.
