In 2011, Berlin took a decisive step towards a liveable city with equal rights for pedestrians, cyclists, cars and public transport with the "Urban Development Plan for Transport". Part of this is the Pedestrian Strategy, which aims to develop Berlin into a pedestrian-friendly city with attractive, safe and direct connections.
In Bergmannstraße, for example, an encounter zone was created on a trial basis, in which the roadway was reduced by reversible measures. Car parking spaces were significantly reduced in favour of temporary parklets with recreational facilities. In order to illustrate the advantages of deceleration and pedestrianisation, temporary, structural changes were initially carried out using simple means. The project was accompanied by a dialogue with citizens, residents and traders and can be made permanent or modified after evaluation. The interventions were intended to invite direct occupation of Bergmannstraße and to demonstrate new potentials for the use and co-production of public space.
