The refurbishment and extension of the comprehensive school in Melsungen is based on a building complex from the 1950s with generous open spaces and an exposed location on the ridge of the Fulda Valley. The building ensemble was structurally and spatially weakened by various inexpensive extensions from the 1970s.
While most of the buildings from the 1970s were removed, the buildings from the 1950s were largely preserved, renovated to make them more energy-efficient and given new uses. With the construction of the new north wing, the spatial structure has been further developed while preserving the valuable existing trees and opening up towards the Fulda valley.
The new building gives the central schoolyard clear spatial edges and forms the center of the entire complex. The connection to the lower schoolyards is ensured by a grass staircase. This cherry-covered staircase and ramp system provides the main pedestrian access and also forms an attractive meeting point between the schoolyard and the play and sports facilities on the lower level of the school grounds.
