In its heyday, the up to 40-meter-wide gap between the Residenz, the Hofgarten, the medieval city center, and the baroque city adjoining it to the south was designed as a promenade where a large part of public life took place.
But little remained of the old splendor when the city decided to redevelop it in 2009.
In an elaborate design process with all interest groups, it was first explored how the historically representative character could be reconciled with contemporary traffic demands.
The result is that the lifeline of the city is now once again dominated by a wide promenade. Space-creating rows of trees characterize the compartments, cut hedges structure the traffic areas and at the same time create quiet areas with charming views into the facade alignments.
