The groundwater lake created by many years of gravel mining with a water surface of almost 40 ha is located in the north of Munich. The development of a recreational area was started during the gravel mining. In the eastern area of the Hollerner See, the public recreation area with bathing use was developed, the last construction phase with bathing area was completed in the summer of 2020 and is now in operation.

The design elements include an extensive parking lot with about 600 parking spaces, extensive lawns with specimen trees and woody plantings. A generous trail network of bicycle and pedestrian paths leads through the recreation area and around the lake. The bathing area includes the former flushing sand area, which has been designed as a grassed sunbathing area with shady trees, as well as sand and gravel beach areas with bathing bays and a paved shore promenade with seating and sunbathing areas. A boules field, a summer stick track, a sun terrace and a beach volleyball court can be found on the eastern shore. A variety of differently maintained meadow areas are used: hard-wearing utility turf as a sunbathing lawn, species-rich heathland, species-rich rough grassland and landscaped lawn areas.

The western lake area is laid out close to nature. At the southern area the steep bank is preserved as a breeding place for sand martins. A pine-oak woodland of native trees will be developed as a boundary to the embankment. Other embankments were established with dense, lawn-like vegetation or dense willow bushes to secure the bank against erosion as well as protection against trespassing.

As part of the final reclamation work, the swimming bays on the eastern part were deepened and completed in December 2020 by underwater modelling with a floating dredger to prevent drying out during low water levels as well as algae growth.
