The historical function as a transportation hub has shaped the appearance of Gänsemarkt for centuries. In principle, the design concept for the redesign of the Gänsemarkt supports this traditional guiding and functional image and thus makes the history of the square clearly legible. The Lessing monument, inaugurated in 1881, is described as a historical anchor point on the Gänsemarkt and will be moved back to its original location in the approximate center of the square as part of the redesign. The square area around the Lessing monument is a flexible space for events of all kinds, such as the traditional Christmas and antique market, the annual summer festival or public viewing events.
