Following the establishment of the geriatric ward in 1995, the Bonifatius Hospital required extensive new construction and renovation measures, as the existing building could no longer meet the requirements of a modern hospital. This could only be achieved through comprehensive restructuring, interventions in the existing structure and additional new buildings. At the heart of this is the new two-storey entrance hall, in which all the necessary service facilities, the cafeteria and relaxation areas are located at ground level. Open galleries on the upper floor provide access to the doctors' surgeries planned here. A newly created connecting axis takes visitors from the entrance hall to the existing elevator cores and on to the adjoining wards.
The redesign of the open spaces as part of the expansion of the Bonifatiuskrankenhaus offers a great opportunity not only to appropriately design the entrance situation and the recreational facilities for patients and visitors to the hospital, but also to integrate them into the overall context of the open spaces of the city of Lingen.
The new access road to the underground car park, which has since been redefined, creates a contiguous open space that leaves enough room for the goals of interweaving the hospital open space with the city's references and defining a "beautiful usability".
