The overall design concept for the open spaces is that of a farmstead, reflected on the one hand by the use of cultivated plants such as vines and fruit trees and on the other by the open water areas fed by rainwater. The use of fruit and wine varieties from the JKI's own breeding program conveys a connection to the mission of the research institute, creates an external presentation and enables a high identification value for the employees. This mediating design theme in the open space on the one hand, and numerous exits from the new buildings and the pathways to the greenhouses and farm buildings on the other, stand for the intensive interweaving of scientific work in the laboratories with the experiments in the field and in the greenhouses.
