Max Planck Institute for the Structure and Dynamics of Matter

The Max Planck Institute for the Structure and Dynamics of Matter is a non-university research institute of the Max Planck Society located in Hamburg-Bahrenfeld on the campus of the German Electron Synchrotron DESY. In the course of the new building construction, the greening of extensive roof areas was planned and realized by our office.

The new building is positioned on the site in a north-south direction, so that between the Center for Free-Electron Laser

Science and the new Max Planck Institute for the Structure and Dynamics of Matter in the form of a square situation as a link and campus. The functionality and design of the outdoor facilities are clearly related to the functions of the building. In accordance with the specifications, the overall quality of the outdoor space has been upgraded, but at the same time formally simplified.

In the interests of sustainability and economical use of space, extensive roof areas were also greened. The intensively greened roof terraces serve as high-quality recreational areas for students and teaching staff, while the outdoor area of the canteen is located on the roof areas above the second floor. Further, extensively greened areas accommodate the necessary technical equipment of the research institute.
