The Joan Miró elementary school combines a mainstream school and a state-run European school in the form of a tied all-day school under one roof. For the approximately 800 pupils, there are three playgrounds and a public playground opposite in the immediate vicinity as a recreation and play area.
The redesign was intended to remedy the design and functional deficits of both areas.
As part of a comprehensive participation process, the children's desire to be inspired by the dream and fantasy worlds of the school's namesake, the Spanish painter, graphic artist and sculptor Joan Miró, crystallized in the design of the open spaces. His striking visual language of lines, colors, signs and symbols particularly stimulated the children's creativity.
By commissioning the project in parallel, we were able to work hand in hand on the planning and development of the play equipment from the outset. Together, we took the children's wishes, sketches and models and used them to develop play equipment and furnishings based on Miró's world of form and imagery.
A blue ribbon, symbolizing a river, connects the different areas. The play areas are distributed as islands along the blue ribbon.
