The redesigned section of the Lauter in Dettingen/Teck lies between a weir and the so-called "Gaulsgumpen" and was almost completely devalued from an aquatic ecology point of view before the redesign due to massive obstructions. Due to the weir system and two further drops with a total height of 2.60 meters, the stream section was not passable for aquatic life. Upstream migration, which is important for maintaining the populations, could no longer take place. In order to achieve the objectives of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) to achieve good ecological status, several measures were necessary, which were implemented in 2020. One of these was to ensure a minimum water discharge into the mother bed of the Lauter to prevent a stretch of water over 800 meters from drying up. Secondly, the non-natural bed and bank reinforcements were removed to create a near-natural, structurally rich aquatic habitat. The third and most complex measure was the creation of passability for migrating aquatic organisms through the construction of a vertical slot pass in combination with a near-natural riverbed channel.
