The Elstermühlgraben was largely built over after the end of the GDR and was in a heavily polluted state. In the 1990s, the city of Leipzig began restoring its water structures. As part of this, the Elstermühlgraben was reopened and made accessible in several stages. The construction section between Thomasius- and Friedrich-Ebert-Straße is the final stage of this project. In addition to the restoration of the hydraulic engineering functionality, a car-free alternative footpath connection between the city center and the city harbor is being created here.
The open space concept focuses on making the Elstermühlgraben a tangible experience. Terrace-like widenings with steps and ramps make it possible to approach the water. Small square-like areas offer seating under shady trees. Information boards about the steamboat canal and the Ponjatowskidenkmal are incorporated into the design. Integrated boat moorings will also make it possible to use the canal for water sports. The final part of this project is currently being implemented. The attractive design strengthens Leipzig's green-blue infrastructure and contributes to sustainable urban development in the long term.
A special design highlight can only be seen when darkness falls. The lighting concept, which is tailored to the situation, sets the scene for the Elstermühlgraben and creates a place to look at and linger in the evening and at night.
