The type-built school, built in 1974, was expanded to a capacity of up to 570 pupils in the course of modernization. When planning the open spaces, the expansion-related intensification of schoolyard use had to be taken into account as well as the integration of new functions. The redesign provides for multi-coded open spaces, including a playground, a small playing field, access paths, parking spaces for cars and bicycles as well as areas for supply and disposal. The beautiful trees were integrated into the planning.

As part of the redesign, the schoolyard was given spacious areas to run around and play. Green islands with large trees structure the areas and provide shade. In the southern schoolyard area, a tree-lined lawn and meadow area has been added as a retreat and as a "green classroom". Before the renovation, heavy rainfall events led to flooding in the basement. As the existing boulder clay does not allow infiltration, the rainfall must be throttled and fed into the sewer system. For this purpose, a rainwater retention volume of approx. 135 m³ is made available on the school yard areas, which ensures delayed drainage in the event of heavy rainfall by temporarily damming up parts of the yard area.
