The University of Trier was newly founded at the end of the 1960s. In contrast to other universities, such as the Ruhr-Uni Bochum with its serial standardized solutions, here individually designed buildings and creatively designed open spaces with their own character were developed. The large-scale form of the Tarforster Höhe was transformed into a sculpturally shaped park landscape. The arrangement of the buildings follows the landscape idea. The campus consists of 2 parts. The Campus 1 developed on agricultural areas, the Campus 2 however from the Nachnutzung of the former French military hospital "Andre Genet".
The special feature of the plant is the harmony of architecture, art and landscape. The site also includes a "Road of Stones".
The site, which covers around 110 hectares, was planned by the State Office for Building Construction (LBB) in collaboration with the landscape architects Bierbaum (Mainz), Ernst (Trier), Staudt (Trier) and BGH (Trier) and was completed between 1974 and 2005. It received the recognition for exemplary buildings in Rhineland-Palatinate.
