Restoration of the "Blümelteich" in the park "Volkspark Mariendorf"

Blümelteich, a pond, is part of the monumental garden called Volkspark Mariendorf. The pond was created as a model boat pond with walls, staircases and wooden embankments around the pond. As such, it is in use nowadays. The Western part is separated by a pond wall - the former footbridge of the sailors - and could develop as a "natural pond".
In addition, the Blümelteich serves the Berlin water companies as a retention area for extreme weather events with heavy precipitation. In the meantime, protected reed beds have developed in the pond.
The pond is heavily silted and the bank edgings, paths and steps are in need of restoration. Therefore, the district administration has commissioned a desilting and remediation, including the following actions:
- Clearing the pond of debris and trash, desilting the
pond and restoring it to its original water depth and shoreline,
- Producing a roadworthy shoreline stabilization in accordance with historical preservation standards, and renovating the
stairways,
- Reconstruction of the pond wall to demarcate a natural pond area,
- New plantings of reed, sowing of herbs, new planting of trees in the natural pond-area and their protection by a fence,
- Restoration of the square and path areas in accordance with the preservation order as well as new equipment with a variety of benches.
