The former barracks "Auf der Freiheit" are to be put to a new urban use - also in view of the site's location in relation to Schleswig's city centre and its importance for the region. The intention is to create "...a new type of intergenerational living, living and holidaying..." in which "...all age groups of different income levels and needs are represented...". The development concept is the result of an urban planning competition won by the Lohaus Carl office together with architects BKSP.
The promenade along the Schlei is part of a regional footpath system, with connections to Schleswig town centre, Holmer Noor, the Danish school and the adjacent Schleiuferweg to the south.
Promenade
On the eastern bank of the Schlei, a 130-metre-long promenade with continuous seating steps facing the water was created on the municipal area of the former harbour site. The seating steps made of light-coloured prefabricated concrete elements are accessed via block steps. The clear form of this grandstand is enlivened by freely distributed wooden seat pads on the steps. Loosely distributed and planted seating objects, whose pointed oval contours are reminiscent of fish or kayaks, structure the concrete paved area, which tapers to the south. At the rear, sand thorns border the promenade and set a special accent with their airy, individual growth and fine orange fruits.
Promenade Square
The main entrance to the promenade is formed by a spacious square with a lawn in its center. On either side of the lawn, five- and 7-meter-wide paths of concrete pavers lead to the promenade and beyond it up block steps to the waterfront directly. As on the promenade, the square is bordered by sand thorns. They run in two rows along the paths and thus, in addition to the matching materiality, connect the square and the promenade. The square opens up towards the Schlei.
The promenade square represents an open, multifunctional area on which large marquees or large objects can be erected.
