For the new construction of the St. Martin primary school in Marktoberdorf, a three-storey building is proposed which directly adjoins the existing building of the former St. Martin day care centre. The school building has two wings with a central staircase hall. The building structure bends in the stair hall and thus mediates between the existing building line at the market place and the connection to the existing building of the day care center. In the front area, the building bends away from the street line and thus creates a generous public area, which is henceforth named "St. Martin's Square".

Structure

The school building is built as a two-winged complex and is accessed from Martinsplatz via the central staircase hall. The entrance is indented from the Eberle-Kögl-Straße. On the ground floor, with a generous opening to the public space, the multi-purpose room with adjoining music hall is organised. The break hall is oriented to the schoolyard and can be connected to the MZR. The MZR sees itself as a showcase to the public space and can thus also be used for external events. The 3 x 4 classrooms are organized on the 1st and 2nd floor directly at the central stair hall. Each cluster functions as a self-contained unit and can be understood as a learning landscape with a central marketplace. At the same time, the year groups can also interweave horizontally and vertically via the central stair hall. The cloakrooms and WC areas are decentrally assigned to the respective clusters. The after-school care centre is organised on the ground floor and 1st floor of the rear second wing. The slope situation in the north-east of the site is used to enable the group rooms on the 1st floor to have direct access to the outside. The MZR of the after-school care as well as the intensive rooms have a direct access to the schoolyard on the ground floor. The single-field sports hall is organised on the 2nd floor, above the group rooms of the after-school care centre. It is visually integrated into the volume of the school building and can thus be harmoniously integrated into the new development. The after-school care area and the sports hall can be accessed barrier-free via a separate entrance from Kurfürstenstraße. By integrating the after-school care centre into the school building, the school's premises could also be used. The administration of the school with the rooms of the principal's office and the teachers' room are located on the 1st floor of the existing day care centre. Barrier-free access is possible via the southern staircase of the new school building.

Development

A simple development concept makes the school building easy to understand and clear. At the same time, the staircases are positioned in such a way that a second structural escape route is demonstrated everywhere. The central staircase hall stages the interweaving of the individual grades and is a symbol of the pedagogical concept.

Open spaces / schoolyard

A clear and public urban space is formed on the school's forecourt. The market square is continued on the opposite side of

Eberle-Kögl-Strasse as St. Martin's Square and its design is based on the design themes of the market square. The space in front of the St. Martin's home is honored with a plaza situation and can easily accommodate the functions of the bus stop. The schoolyard is conceptually seen as part of the Schlossberg and its park. A "green courtyard" with play and strolling paths is proposed. The north-eastern slope is integrated as a play slope and provides a ground level exit for the after-school group area. As a counterpart to the solitary tree on the market square, a large tree is placed on the forecourt of the school. It strengthens the sense of space in the school and is at the same time a natural noise barrier. Covered bicycle parking spaces (approx. 70) are located in the rear part of the building. The necessary 17 car parking spaces are organized along Kurfürstenstraße.

Construction / Facade

The school building is constructed as a solid building. The projecting, light, sandy clinker facade gives the school building a friendly and solid appearance. At the same time, the choice of materiality is a reference to the sustainability of the new school building and represents a maintenance-free facade. Entrances are indicated by a so-called filter masonry and give the respective stairwells an interesting play of light. The external sun protection (external venetian blinds) can also take on the function of glare protection and at the same time allow light into the classrooms. Opening casements allow natural ventilation of the classrooms. A baffle window reduces noise emissions from the street when the window is open. The integration of the existing building of the day-care centre responds to the wish of the municipality, which has expressly expressed itself in favour of the preservation of the building, and at the same time makes use of the existing structural resources. The massive concrete ceilings can be used for building component activation for heating and cooling the rooms. Additional individual heating options exist via convectors in the raised floor along the facades. The technical areas of the new school building are optimally located on the ground floor of the north-eastern slope area. Simultaneous supply of the sports hall and school is possible in a simple manner, even without transfer stations.
