The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in the centre of Berlin is Germany's central Holocaust memorial, a place of remembrance and commemoration of the up to six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust. The memorial consists of the field of stelae designed by Peter Eisenman and the information site located underground.
On 25 June 1999, after many years of debate, the German Bundestag passed a resolution to erect the "Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe". In the immediate vicinity of the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag building, in the heart of Berlin, the memorial was built from April 2003 to May 2005 according to the design of the New York architect Peter Eisenman.
The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe consists of the 19,000 m² field of stelae with 2,711 concrete blocks and the underground Information Centre. The exhibition there first provides an overview of the National Socialist persecution policy from 1933 to 1945. The subsequent four thematic rooms are dedicated to the families and names of the victims as well as the dimensions and locations of the crimes. The focus is on personal fates and the geographical extent of the murder of European Jews. The place of information is visited annually by nearly half a million guests.
Individual visitors can take part in a Public Guided Tour or access the Place of Information through an audio tour. Visitor groups have the option of booking in-depth guided tours or workshops through the Visitor Service.
With this memorial, according to the Parliament, Germany wants to honor the six million Jews murdered by the Nazis and keep alive the memory of an unimaginable event in German history.
The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe is overseen by the Federal Foundation Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. It is also responsible for the memorials to the homosexuals persecuted under National Socialism and to the murdered Sinti and Roma of Europe.
