The Soviet Memorial in Treptower Park is one of three memorials erected in Berlin immediately after the end of the Second World War. It is also a military cemetery with many individual graves.
As a result of a competition, the proposal of a Soviet group of artists was implemented from 1946. Characteristic parts of the memorial are a triumphal arch at the Puschkinallee, a path lined with hanging birches along the central axis, stylized flags made of red granite at the entrance to the main field, a symbolic burial ground in the center of the memorial, 16 white sarcophagi at the edge as well as the central place of the memorial, an artificially created burial mound on which the sculpture "The Liberator" by Jewgeni Wutschetitsch stands.
The memorial is located in the 88-hectare garden monument "Treptower Park", which was created between 1876-1888 according to plans of the garden directors Johann Heinrich Gustav Meyer and Hermann Mächtig.
